Confluent has truly revolutionized how we process and react to real time data flows on our e commerce platform. For us, the single best use case has been to provide immediate event driven inventory updates to our warehouses. Inventory would previously take up to 5 minutes to sync to all of our other distribution channels; this has greatly reduced the number of times we have oversold an item.
The fact that Confluent provides a fully managed Kafka service has greatly simplified our operational concerns. I remember having to spend entire weekends debugging my own self hosted kafka cluster and resolving broker failures and rebalance issues. With Confluent Cloud, those headaches are largely gone. I've found the ksqlDB feature to be particularly valuable for creating real-time analytics dashboards without needing to build out custom consumer applications.
However, the cost of Confluent Cloud can be very expensive, especially when your volume increases. We experienced a significant increase in our monthly bill when we exceeded a certain threshold of data consumption and were surprised by this price increase as it was not clearly shown in the pricing calculator provided. The learning curve for configuring connectors for optimal performance and understanding proper partition strategies is steeper than we initially anticipated.
Overall, the tool set is very good, including the monitoring tools and schema registry. However, we feel the documentation could include some real world troubleshooting scenarios instead of simply providing a theoretical example of how to resolve common problems. All things considered, we believe that Confluent is a great investment if you are serious about event streaming, however, please be aware of the cost implications before committing to production volumes.
