01 Is Airtable any Good? My expert Review

Overall, I've had positive experiences working with Airtable for various projects. The learning curve for the platform is quite easy and its versatility with different views (calendar, Kanban board or just spreadsheet) were useful when changing views when I was managing the content calendar for the marketing team.

Airtable's automation piece really showcased the platform for me. The reminders and follow-ups that were built-in for event management saved our team a few hours without a week. I also liked how I could integrate Airtable with both Slack & Google Workspace. Collaboration was easier than using any other similar tool I've worked on in the past.

There were a few bumps along the way. There were smaller clients or independents that were unsure of relational databases (usually from older systems), who it took a little more time and patience and training to get them comfortable in the platform. While Airtable is great for internal data, building something so that I had customer-facing portals was a little more challenging then I was expecting; I was bringing in 3rd party tools like Softr that worked, but added unnecessary steps (and costs).

In the end, I still see value in Airtable. It is one of the best platforms to help teams stay organized and collaborate effectively together. I think it is worth looking at if you want to have something robust and useful that is also not difficult to use.

  • Difficulty in creating a customer portal
Some users have reported challenges in creating a customer portal using Airtable, requiring the use of additional products to achieve this functionality

  • Overwhelming for individual users
Airtable's extensive features and customization options can be overwhelming for individual users or solopreneurs who are not familiar with digital asset management or relational databases

04 How Airtable compare to similar software?

Airtable and Notion are versatile productivity platforms requiring minimal technical skills and no coding. They share common use cases like project management, CRM, and content planning. However, their strengths differ significantly. Starting as a note-taking tool, Notion excels in document and information management. It now offers adaptable features for a wide range of applications, focusing on document and knowledge management. A good illustration of this is its customizable wikis, powerful tools for organizing and sharing information in your organization.

In comparison, Airtable shines when it comes to managing large relational databases, making it ideal for tasks like inventory management. If you’re used to Google Sheets or Excel, you’ll find Airtable’s spreadsheet-based interface intuitive for handling structured data. It enables you to easily navigate your data by creating links between records. While Notion does offer database features, they can be less customizable and slower...

Airtable and Smartsheet are both robust platforms designed to enhance project management, but they diverge significantly when it comes to their core functionalities and ideal use-cases.

Firstly, let's talk about customization and flexibility. Airtable's unique selling point is its incredible customization capabilities. This tool can transform into whatever you need it to be, from a CRM to a content management system, or even an inventory tracker. The built-in database engine allows users to create complex relational databases without any coding. This means that Airtable can evolve along with your project or business needs. In contrast, Smartsheet is designed to be a project management tool from the ground up. While it does offer a good degree of customization with its features like Gantt charts, project timelines, and resource management, these elements are fine-tuned for project management tasks as compared to Airtable's jack-of-all-trades approach.

The second significant difference...

The fundamental difference between Airtable and Bubble lies in their core functionalities. Airtable is primarily designed to act as a super-powered spreadsheet with relational database capabilities. It aims to simplify complex data management tasks, making it easy for businesses to organize their workflows, projects, and more. On the other hand, Bubble is a visual programming platform that allows users to build web applications without the need to code. It provides you with the tools to create complex web-based software, thereby expanding far beyond the realm of data management into actual software development.

Another distinction is where each platform excels. Airtable shines in its ease of use and versatility, particularly for project management and team collaboration. Its features like linking records, customizable views, and a large number of integrations make it a powerful tool for businesses that need to manage data in a more structured yet flexible manner. It is especially...
